Radel Esca and Blake 9 working together as the Dead Artists set out to put a forward spin on traditional concepts of hip hop. Maintaining a fairly straight ahead ethic, yet incorporating many of their other influences into the mix as well. Paying homage to those that came before them that had valued a progressive sound within hip hop. A sound that might shout out to early De La Soul, or Del the Funky Homosapien, or any number of artists who refused to take the safest route.
2002 saw their debut single, “Vital Media” b/w “Adopt the Formula” released as a 7” on Echelon Productions. The A-side, “Vital Media” displayed a sparse yet classic SP1200 banger as only Blake9 can do, with Esca’s vocal telling a story from the perspective of a man unsure of whether or not his surroundings reflect the waking life or dreams. The flip-side came off a little more mellow and melodic, with the sweet flute samples weaving in and out of the spacey drones and verbed out drums.
Currently, Dead Artists are working on writing and recording new tunes, so keep your eyes open for their next release.
