Over the last few years, Dan Geller and Amy Dykes have traveled the globe, spreading their message of dance music for smart people—a concept scarce in these days of progressive house and hand-me-down rave culture. They’ve found themselves in the company of other smart, young bands making this emotionally based electronica like The Postal Service and Her Space Holdiay. IATWTC’s concept has also always included a healthy dose of romance as well, which goes straight back to their heroes in bands like Berlin and Blondie, where the onstage (and on-tape) chemistry of alternately warring and loving couples was frequently half the attraction.

Invariably, that element of the attraction implodes, though, and to that end, [their latest album] The Cover Up sets a romantic meltdown to the beat-and-hook driven pop the pair have always delivered. The Trade Center hasn’t given up the catchy grooves overlaid with very human lyrics that they have built their reputation on. The Cover Up was written and recorded while the pair were splitting up romantically, it’s a heart-wrenching affair in line with the great melancholy burners put forth by every great electropop hero from The Human League to New Order.
