Civilian Travelers

— sleepy jean @ 9:09 am

More sweet art shows to check out tonight and tomorrow! Tonight, the Civilian Art Project is hosting an awesome screen-printing show featuring stuff from Seripop, El Jefe Design, and out good friends at Planaria, amongst other talents. Click here to check out the details. Tonight is the opening reception, though it looks like all summer long they’ll be having some really cool exhibits dedicated to various approches to screen printing.

Tomorrow evening, our favorite gallery, Irvine Contemporary will be presenting their second solo show for photographer Gina Brocker. Her documentary style portraits show very personal details for her young subjects. Her most recent series follows up on the Donovan family, who served as the focus of her prior series, with the children now having reached adolescence. According to the gallery, the “family represents a little-known and seldom-documented subculture, the Irish Travelers, a gypsy society now in transition to becoming settled in government-sponsored housing and development communities.” The opening is tomorrow evening, but Gina Brocker will be on hand during the day to sign her new book, and to give a talk before the opening. Check out the gallery site for more info.

Bobby Fisher’s Last Stand

— sleepy jean @ 8:36 am

reposted from allournoise.com

The Bobby Fisher Memorial Building has been home to many, many great events. Ranging from shows for local bands to touring acts like Matt + Kim, a slew of parties from those crazy Corcoran kids at ArtCade, and of course, its first exhibition, a gallery dedicated to the DMV’s very own BORF.

In fact, it’s from him that the structure derives its colloquial name: the BORF building. This Saturday, June 28, that same edifice kicks off its final exhibition: Girlish Ways: The Next Generation of Female Artists, a selection of twelve artists were chosen, each investigating how “contemporary lifestyles affect and re-define the women of this generation.”

The exhibition is curated by Rachel Fick and Marissa Botelho; you can read about all 12 artists after the jump.

Getting a Running Start

— sleepy jean @ 12:59 pm

We are quickly coming upon the end of the first half of 2008, and as usually it’s tearing past us. But that’s not to say that we haven’t been keeping up. Marquis has been picking up some nice momentum, and the last few have been packed! This week you have another chance to get down with residents Outputmessage & Triobelisk, and special guest Terror Dactel at Napoleon.

Next week, Marquis DJs Micah Vellian & Triobelisk are guesting at Mass Appeal at the Rock and Roll Hotel with Autorock, DJ Milk + VJ Speed Powek on Saturday July 5th at 9pm.

Now, the last.fm Foals remix contest is over, and unfortunately Dmerit didn’t win. But we still have it for download here. Get it while you can. That should tide you over for the time being. But make sure to mark your calendar for July 12th when the Dmerit boys debut their live set at Feedback at DC9, where they share the stage with Devlin & Darko (Spank Rock) and hometown hero DJ Stereofaith.

On a bittersweet note, next week also is a farewell of sorts as we send off our friends Metropolitan. They’ve been in the studio recording a new album, but this will be their final recording. We’ll have more details about that as those emerge. In the meanwhile though, if you are in DC, you can catch their final performance at the Black Cat on July 5th, as they share the stage with Baltimore’s Wye Oak, Bellflurand Face Accidents. Its going to be an awesome show so make sure to be there.

Tonight, by the way if you are up for going out, our country steampunker pals the Cassettes will be playing at IOTA w/ Aerialist and The Mantras.

Oh man, tons going on with our crews these days. Deleted Scenes is also in the process of finishing up their album. We can’t give up too much just yet, but we are super excited about it. They are playing a few shows in the next couple of weeks as well, but in a few different towns, so I’ll just list them here to make it easier for you. Plus, we’ll have more info as the dates get closer.

July 4 8:00P James Joyce (w/Hammer No More the Fingers) — Durham, NC
Jul 10 8:00P Iota (w/Solar Powered Sun Destroyer, Gary B!) – Arlington, VA
Jul 12 8:00P Lahvd Party, 470 Flushing Ave (w/ Great Lakes) — Brooklyn, NY
Aug 2 7:30P Mercury Lounge (w/Childballads, The Never!) — New York, NY
Aug 8 8:00P Spazzatorium Galleria! — Greenville, NC

Finally, I just wanted to remind you all about our little project which has been gobbling loads of our time recently—All Our Noise. It’s a music site celebrating indie, electronic and experimental goodness. Check it out! We’ve got some video interviews with Time Machine, MSTRKRFT, Tittsworth & Dave Nada, so far and coming this week we’ve got These United States & Times New Viking!

Overweight: Dalek @ Irvine Contemporary

— sleepy jean @ 5:51 pm

Dalek is coming to town, and this Saturday, you can come check out his new series of work at Irvine Contemporary. The opening reception is on Saturday May 17th from 6-8, but startin today you can can witness an on-site piece in progress that Dalek is working on with DC artist Tim Conlon. If you are familiar with Dalek’s work, you will be quite impressed with the new batch.

He now goes far beyond Murakami’s “superflat” to a kaleidoscopic play of space and color that embodies the competing and conflicting forces in today’s world.

The tensions are clear, and the bold color patterns pull you in in a thoroughly engaging way. Dalek’s work seems to provide a particularly intriguing comment on a pop culture that struggles to make any clear distinction on the high and the low.

If you are lucky, you were on a short list to a VIP advanced opening tomorrow night, and featuring Outputmessage behind the decks. The show is up through June 21th, but don’t wait because you will forget and kick yourself for putting it off until it’s too late. I know you.
