Check it. Marquis is the Echelon Productions DJ night. do you know about this? We’ve already had 4 and they just keep getting better. This night occurs on last Thursdays of every month at Napoleon Bistro in Adams Morgan. Resident DJs Outputmessage & Micah Vellian (Person). Click here to listen to 2 mixes from the July party.

Also, this upcoming Thursday, S&P will be playing a show that you probably won’t want to miss. Ray’s Vast Basement makes their way out to our part of the world from San Francisco, with their lovely folk-country-pop. Their 3rd and latest album, Starvation Under Orange Trees, is a literary concept piece inspired by Steinbeck’s Of Mice & Men, which as Pitchfork states, “doesn’t just mean the lyrics are smart, but rather that they evoke a time, place, and culture specifically and artfully.” Instead of retelling the story through song, the band ventures beyond dust bowl realism and “explore Depression culture on a larger scale: “Work Song” and “California’s Gone” follow itinerants westward to labor in orange groves, and “The Story of Lee” recounts the trials of a Chinese immigrant. On the closing “Annalisa”, a boxcar-jumper longs for the love he left behind, and the spirited “Cotton Black” is a boxing tale that could have been inspired by George Bellows’ pugilist paintings.” Featuring Decemberist Nate Query on bass, Michael Zapruder, and occasional collaborations with the likes of John Vanderslice, and John Darnielle of Mountain Goats fame, in the words of Epitonic, the band “is bound to be one of the most refreshing and satisfying musical experiences you’ve had in a long time.”

Timothy Bracken Complex’s catchy indie pop and the fractured folk noise pop of Stamen & Pistils start off a solid show you won’t want to miss.
