Civilian Travelers

— sleepy jean @ 9:09 am

More sweet art shows to check out tonight and tomorrow! Tonight, the Civilian Art Project is hosting an awesome screen-printing show featuring stuff from Seripop, El Jefe Design, and out good friends at Planaria, amongst other talents. Click here to check out the details. Tonight is the opening reception, though it looks like all summer long they’ll be having some really cool exhibits dedicated to various approches to screen printing.

Tomorrow evening, our favorite gallery, Irvine Contemporary will be presenting their second solo show for photographer Gina Brocker. Her documentary style portraits show very personal details for her young subjects. Her most recent series follows up on the Donovan family, who served as the focus of her prior series, with the children now having reached adolescence. According to the gallery, the “family represents a little-known and seldom-documented subculture, the Irish Travelers, a gypsy society now in transition to becoming settled in government-sponsored housing and development communities.” The opening is tomorrow evening, but Gina Brocker will be on hand during the day to sign her new book, and to give a talk before the opening. Check out the gallery site for more info.
