Ouputmessage and I spun at our friends’ weekly happy hour, Beyond, in Dupont Circle, last week. It’s mostly downtempo stuff that gets played there. Outputmessage decided to take a few tracks from his set and make a little mix as a part of his OutputRadio mix series on his blog. Here’s the track listing:

Overweight: Dalek @ Irvine Contemporary

— sleepy jean @ 5:51 pm

Dalek is coming to town, and this Saturday, you can come check out his new series of work at Irvine Contemporary. The opening reception is on Saturday May 17th from 6-8, but startin today you can can witness an on-site piece in progress that Dalek is working on with DC artist Tim Conlon. If you are familiar with Dalek’s work, you will be quite impressed with the new batch.

He now goes far beyond Murakami’s “superflat” to a kaleidoscopic play of space and color that embodies the competing and conflicting forces in today’s world.

The tensions are clear, and the bold color patterns pull you in in a thoroughly engaging way. Dalek’s work seems to provide a particularly intriguing comment on a pop culture that struggles to make any clear distinction on the high and the low.

If you are lucky, you were on a short list to a VIP advanced opening tomorrow night, and featuring Outputmessage behind the decks. The show is up through June 21th, but don’t wait because you will forget and kick yourself for putting it off until it’s too late. I know you.

Noise Ordinance

Teenage Jesus & the Jerks
It’s almost hard to imagine a New York that’s cheap to live in today, considering how much flash and cash is tossed around. But in the mid to late 1970s, after barely avoiding bankruptcy, New York City was exactly that—a run down town with plenty of cheap space for artists to work on tight shit. Hip-hop and punk rock have gotten their fair share of coverage from would be cultural historians and academics alike. But notably left out is no wave, which interwove music, visual & performance art and film in an explosive and chaotic burst to become a very influential movement. Our good friend (and member of Portions Toll) Marc Masters has recently had published, possibly the most thorough document on the subject to date. No Wave, a beautiful book filled with the history, interviews, and rare photos—certainly essential reading. Other Music calls it…

…an essential document of a time and place which, while seeming somewhat unimportant at the time, has proven its influence (for better or worse) and has gone on to outlive and outlast that true grit, grime, and terror of what Downtown New York once was — a wasteland of creative opportunity and a nihilist’s paradise. Think about that, and of these artists, the next time you pass by the new Bowery Hotel on your way to Whole Foods on Houston Street.

Tomorrow night, come out and join Marc for a night of No Wave. First, a reading and signing at CROOKED BEAT RECORDS in Adams Morgan. Then later that night, Marc will be DJing some No Wave tunes at Marx Cafe. Details below!

NO WAVE NIGHT
Friday May 2nd
CROOKED BEAT RECORDS in Adams Morgan
2318 18th St NW, Washington DC
Starts at 7pm

Marc Masters DJing at “We Fought The Big One”
MARX CAFÉ in Mt. Pleasant
3203 Mount Pleasant St. NW, Washington DC
From 10pm to 3am
